Clio's Musings
The California Gold Rush might never have happened if it were not for Jane Wimmer of Coloma, California. Having grown up near the gold mines of Georgia, she recognized gold in the drinking water at her California boarding house. The men laughed at "Mrs. Wimmer's gold." Then on the morning of January 24, 1848, as she was making soap, James Marshall showed her the interesting rock he had found. She suggested they put it into the suds, explaining, "If it comes out bright, it is gold." It was gold. Marshall ran to John Sutter, thus launching the mad gold rush. Jane Wimmer's part disappeared through history.
Lucretia Mott, born January 3, 1793 in Nantucket, Massachusetts, became a Minister in the Society of Friends at the age of 28. She was a charter member of the first Female Anti-Slavery Society and became nationally known for her oratorical skills in the abolitionist cause. These skills also served the women's movement from its inception at Seneca Falls until her death in 1880. Ms. Mott was described by those who worked with her as "saintly in character, serene in countenance, and gentle in manner." But she maintained radical views and made forceful statements

regarding them. For example, at a Women's Rights Convention in Philadelphia in 1854 she responded to a minister's contention that men should have authority over women by declaring, "The veneration of man has been misdirected, the pulpit has been prostituted, the Bible has been ill-used." She went on to quote the disciple Peter: "The time is come, this day is fulfilled the prophecy, when it is said, I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy." The oration ends with Ms. Mott asking, "Now can anything be clearer than that?"
WSW is delighted to announce that its manifestation of Clio, the Muse of Herstory, is one year old with this issue.

Network/WSW
Last month we introduced the WSW network and invited women to participate in creating a grass-roots women's network in Ohio. The purpose of the network is to link women with other women on a one-toone basis. To participate, send to Network/WSW 50 to 100 words identifying your explorations, talents, abilities-anything you would like to share about yourself. Include your name, address, telephone number, $1 and a self-addressed stamped envelope. WSW will make the network visible by printing your passage and first name. You will then receive in the mail the names, addresses and telephone numbers of the other networkers. It will be up to you to initiate further connections and respond to cooperators who are interested in you.
I am a feminist who is a manager in a small company. I am in. terested in sharing experiences in business and managernent with other women Specifically, I would like to explore the question of how (and if) business interests can be compatible with feminist principles For example, can women in management help instill a spirit of collectivity in their work environments? Can positions of "authority" be used to transform the hierarchical structures in most businesses?

I have been deeply involved in alternative education for several years and would gladly share my knowledge with others I would like to learn more about housing rehabilitation, from both personal and community perspectives-everything from plann ing and financing lo necessary construction and repair skills. (I'd love to see a women's cooperative apartment building and center in Cleveland!) I'd like to find a part-time "apprenticeship" with a woman skilled in plumbing. I am also interested in explor. ing various forms of cooperative living.

I would be interested in anyone willing to discuss the matriar chal origins of civilization and mythology from a feminist viewpoint. I believe in socialism, that prostitution should be legalized and all that radical stuff. I believe that women will be freed not by wresting power away from men but by a sort of spiritual revolution wherein the talents of women unknown to themselves are recognized and developed. I believe this force will revolu lionize slagnant religion.
